The White Fenn Marzahne is a lake, a boggy wetland and a natural monument in the district of Potsdam-Mittelmark , in the town of Havelsee north of the Marzahne district in the Seelensdorfer Forest or the Marzahner Heide.

History of origin

The White Fenn Marzahne

The White Fenn Marzahne was created after the last glacial period , the Weichselian glacial period . Advancing ice masses created a series of channel basins similar to the parallel Beetzsee-Riewendsee or Bohnenland-Görden channel, in which meltwater flowed off or collected. Corresponding to the direction of advance of the ice, it runs from northeast to southwest. In this row of channel basins, for example, the Pritzerber See later formed in the southwest . Later on, flat dunes crossed and still cross the valley of the channel in the northeast of the row of channels. These dunes created a barrier for the White Fenn to the southwest so that water could no longer run off and the marshy wetland was created. In modern times, a ditch, the Rote Graben, was created to drain the wetland and the lake. This drains to Lake Pritzerber. The White Fenn Marzahne is not to be confused with the Marzahner Fenn , an Ice Age glacier tongue basin, which is about two kilometers to the southeast.

Protected areas

The White Fenn Marzahne was placed under protection in its entirety as an area natural monument. It is also part of the FFH area Weißes Fenn and Dünenheide, which also includes parts of the Marzahner Fenn and Dünenheide nature reserve. Besides, it is part of the conservation area, and the Westhavelland Nature Park .
