In the area of data transmission , the term segment can be defined differently depending on the context:

1. Part of a network that is logically separated by bridges , routers or switches .

2. In a LAN with a bus topology , a segment is a coherent circuit that is usually connected to segments of the same type via a router.

3. If the term is used in connection with TCP , it represents a separate part of a data stream .

Within an IP data transmission chain there are relay stations of different designs, this is also expressed in the size of the data buffer for incoming and outgoing data. So that data can be transmitted via any number of stations, the transmission packets must have different packets. This division is called segmentation.

aims

The segmentation is used to increase performance and / or to increase security, e.g. B. by separating particularly sensitive network segments (e.g. development department) from other segments (e.g. training rooms).
