Ségou or Segu is a town in Mali with 133,501 inhabitants (2009 census). It is located on the Niger River 235 km northeast of Bamako and is the capital of the Ségou region of the same name .
history
The Bozo people founded Ségou around 1620. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Bambara , founded by Biton Mamary Coulibaly in 1712 and which lasted until 1861, the year of its final conquest by Muslim troops.
The historic Ségou ( "Segou-Koro" ) is located about 10 km southwest of today's city center. It essentially plays the novel Segu by Maryse Condé, who received the alternative Nobel Prize in Literature for it in 2018.

Ségou today
Today Ségou is known for its fish industry and the fish market, the water tower in the city center is visible from afar. The Festival sur le Niger, which has been taking place in the city every February since 2005, attracts numerous visitors.
