Rope suspension bridge weather
The Wetter rope suspension bridge is a suspension bridge over the Ruhr in the city of Wetter (Ruhr) in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The bridge belongs to the premises of the AVU Volmarstein community waterworks (formerly Barmer Wasserwerk ) and is located in protection zone I of the Volmarstein water protection area . The bridge can therefore only be viewed publicly in exceptional cases.
history
The pedestrian bridge was built in 1893, making it the oldest suspension bridge of its kind in Germany. At the time of its construction, it was intended for the employees of the Volmarstein waterworks so that they could better reach the so-called Ruhrinsel . The island is a piece of land between the Ruhr and the Mühlen- or Obergraben , a branch of the river dammed by the Harkort power station .
The historical iron construction has wire ropes and brick abutments , the decks of the bridge are made of wood.
In 1985 the rope suspension bridge was placed under monument protection; As monument no. 88, it is part of Wetter's list of monuments . A few years later, in the early 1990s, it was discovered that the bridge was no longer stable . Since then it has not been allowed to enter.
