History and naming

In 1927, an architectural competition was held for the construction of a new secondary school for girls. The winning design came from the architect Paul Schaeffer-Heyrothsberge . The building tender for the school was published on August 1, 1929 and the design of the school was presented to the public in the Altmärkische Tageszeitung on September 25, 1929. The laying of the foundation stone began in autumn of the same year. On March 25, 1931, the school, then still under the name of the State Upper Lyceum of the City of Stendal , was inaugurated with a ceremony.

During 1940 and 1941, the school's gymnasium was home to German paratroopers . From 1941 to 1944 the building was used as a school again. In 1944 the building was rebuilt and used as a retirement home until 1945. After the end of World War II, the school was first occupied by the Allied forces from 1945 to 1946 and by the Soviet forces from 1946 to 1952. Despite the occupation, the school operations continued in part from 1945. The school was called the Helene Lange School from 1945 to 1948 and the Comenius School from 1949 . The year 1949 not only brought a change of name, but from that year on, boys and girls went to school together here. From the school year 1991 on, the school became a grammar school, which was also reflected in the name ( Comenius grammar school ). The high school was closed in 2002 and modernized from 2005 to 2007. The school reopened as a secondary school at the beginning of the 2007/2008 school year . In 2008 the name of the secondary school Comenius Stendal was finally given . It is still used as a school today.

The school was named after the pedagogue Jan Amos Comenius . In the 17th century he took the view of non-violent learning for boys and girls together.

The school building is registered in the local register of monuments as a monument under the number 094 17917.

location

The school is located on Blumenthalstrasse, near the Stendal main station. To the northwest is the city lake and the zoo.

layout

The Comenius School is a no-frills functional building in the form of an L. With its brick cladding, the building fits in with the local school tradition as well as with the North German brick architecture. The main staircase is in the massive corner tower of the building. The staircase itself, with its three-flight staircase, is reminiscent of the stairs in the teaching wing of the Dessau Bauhaus building from 1926. The building itself also serves as a privacy screen between the street and the schoolyard.
