Self concept model

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Self-concept models are called model ideas that describe the structure of the self-concept . One of the most influential models is the Shavelson et al. a. (1976).

Hierarchical self-concept model according to Shavelson et al

It characterizes the self-concept model through a multi-dimensional, hierarchical structure with the global self-concept at the top of the hierarchy. On the next level, a distinction is made between a school and a non-school self-concept (a social , an emotional and a physical self-concept). For the school self-concept, self-concepts are then differentiated on the level below with regard to important content areas (subjects). Shavelson et al. a. assume that the self-concept includes not only self-descriptions but also self- assessments and that it is related to similar concepts (e.g. personality models) . In research, the model has been confirmed in many empirical studies; however, the hierarchy has proven to be more complex than Shavelson et al. a. assumed.
