Selvagem Grande ( German  "Große Wilde" ) is the largest island of the Ilhas Selvagens ( English Savage Islands ), an archipelago politically belonging to Portugal ( Autonomous Region Madeira ) , located west of the North African Atlantic coast and north of the Canary Islands .

The island, which is uninhabited apart from a year-round manned park guard station, is located in the northeast of the Ilhas Selvagens and, together with three very small islets ( Ilhéu Sinho , Palheiro do Mar , Palheiro de Terra ), also forms the northeast group of the archipelago . The surface area is 2.45 km².

Selvagem Grande is of volcanic origin. The extinct volcanic cones ( Pico da Atalaia , Pico dos Tornozelos and Pico do Inferno ) are difficult to reach because the coast is made up of 70-90 m high cliffs and dangerous reefs make the journey to the island difficult. Landing with a ship is only possible in a few places.

The island has had a 33 m high lighthouse since 1977 , which initially had a permanent crew of two guards, but was then automated. It stands on the highest point Pico da Atalaia , 200 meters inland from Enseada da Atalaia Bay on the west coast.
