The Senegalese female fish ( Elops senegalensis ) is a large, almost one meter long bony fish from the family of female fish (Elopidae), which occurs on the West African coast from Mauritania to the Democratic Republic of the Congo . It also goes into brackish and fresh water .

features

The Senegalese womanfish has a very elongated body and is a maximum of 90 cm long, but usually remains at a length of 60 cm. The maximum published weight is 5.9 kg. The species can easily be confused with the West African female fish ( Elops lacerta ). It differs from Elops lacerta in the larger number of lateral line scales (92 to 100 compared to 72 to 83) and the smaller number of gill rakes on the lower branch of the first gill arch (11 to 15 + 1 to 2 compared to 17 to 19). From Elops saurus , this species used to include all female fish, the Senegalese female fish differs in the smaller number of vertebrae (67 versus 73 to 80).

Way of life

The Senegalese womanfish is found in shallow coastal waters and migrates to the estuaries of rivers where the tides can still be felt. It feeds on smaller fish and on shrimp and other small crustaceans.
