Valley of Gmünd

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gmünd Senke (also Gmünder Senke ) is a basin in the northwestern Waldviertel in Lower Austria .

It consists of the lowlands on both sides of the Lainsitz and extends to the Czech Republic, where it represents the southern part of the Wittingau basin . In the basin, which was filled with water from the Mesozoic to the Tertiary , clays , silts and sands were deposited , which clearly distinguishes this landscape from its surroundings. It is morphologically poor in structures, consists mainly of meadows and fields, which in turn stand out due to their biodiversity. The Lainsitz Valley nature reserve is also located here , which is continued on the Czech side by the UNESCO Třeboňsko Biosphere Reserve , one of the six biosphere reserves in the Czech Republic.

In the north it borders the Litschauer Ländchen , in the south the Lainsitz - Zwettler Hochland, which extends to the Freiwald , and in the east the European main watershed between the Danube and Elbe forms the border.
