Lake Sentani ( Danau Sentani in Indonesian ) is located west of Jayapura in northeastern western New Guinea . The largest inland lake in West Papua is very irregular in shape. Around 30,000 people of the Sentani ethnic group live in 30 villages in the vicinity of the lake, and they feed on the fish from the lake, animals, fruits and vegetables from the environment.
The lake was possibly created by a tectonic uplift, but this has not been proven. In the north there is mountainous terrain, in the south it becomes flatter. The catchment area is around 600 square kilometers with mean annual rainfall of around 2 m. The water level fluctuates by about 40 centimeters over the course of the seasons. The lake is evenly warm down to a depth of ten meters (around 30 ° C) and has pH values between 6.2 and 6.8 on the surface.
The lake was last scientifically examined in 1993. 33 species of fish were found, 18 of them endemic , such as the salmon rainbow fish . Saw rays ( Pristis microdon ) were found in the lake until the 1970s, they are a common motif in traditional Sentani art.
