The salmon-red rainbow fish ( Glossolepis incisus ) is one of the largest species of rainbow fish . Like all rainbow fish, it is a group fish. He is endemic in the Lake Sentani in West Papua before and was in 1907 by Weber scientifically described.

features

The fish of the species show a pronounced sexual dimorphism . Adult males are carmine-red all over their bodies and fins with some shiny silver scales. The most senior male is often the most intensely colored. Females have a yellowish-olive body with golden iridescent scales and transparent fins. Young animals are only slightly olive-green in color with a little silver sheen. Only with a body length of about five centimeters do the males begin to color; with about eight centimeters they are fully colored. The males are higher back than the females. Males grow up to 15 cm, females stay a little smaller.

Occurrence

The species is only found in Lake Sentani, about one hundred square kilometers , west of Jayapura in West Papua. The surface temperatures of the water are 29 to 32 ° C, the pH values 6.2 to 6.8. The rainbow fish are mostly in the bank area. Large groups gather near underwater vegetation or sunken branches. World icon

In the IUCN Red List , the salmon-red rainbow fish is classified as "endangered" because the human population around Lake Sentani, the natural range of the species, has increased significantly, which means increasing water pollution.

Human and salmon rainbow fish

The salmon red rainbow fish is of limited importance as an edible fish in the local markets of the population around Lake Sentani.

At the beginning of the 1970s, the aquarists A. Werner and E. Frech brought living specimens of this species to Germany and propagated them for the aquarium hobby. Today the salmon-red rainbow fish is reproduced commercially worldwide, including animals that no longer have silver scales, as well as piebald breeds and hybrids .

Due to its size and the sometimes territorial behavior of the males, this species should be kept in groups in larger aquariums.
