Senuma Shigeki

Senuma Shigeki ( Japanese 瀬 沼 茂樹 , real name Suzuki Tadanao (鈴木 忠直); born October 6, 1904 in Tōkyō ; died August 14, 1988 ) was a Japanese literary critic .

Senuma Shigeki graduated from Tōkyō Shōka Daigaku (東京 商科 大学), where he met his lifelong friend Itō Sei . Senuma began writing essays, poems, and short stories as a student. He was noticed in 1933 with his publication “Contemporary Literature”. After graduation, he was initially employed by the Chikura publishing house (千 倉 書房, Chikura shobō) and then worked at Nihon University and elsewhere.

Senuma is known for careful study and broad perspective on modern literature. His most important works include

  • "Literatur der Gegewart" (現代 の 文学, Gendai bungaku) ​​1933, a collection of essays that includes a detailed analysis of the literature of the early years of the Shōwa period ,
  • "Origins of modern Japanese literature - origin and self" (近代 日本 文学 の な り た ち 家 と 自我, Kindai Nhon bungaku no naritachi ie to jiga) 1951,
  • “History of the Japanese literary community” (日本 文壇 史, Nihon bundan-shi), 1977–78. In 1978 he received the Yomiuri Literature Prize for this .
