The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center is located in northern Borneo , about 25 kilometers west of Sandakan in the Malaysian state of Sabah .

The center has existed since 1964. Immediately after the end of the British colonial era, the Forest Service began establishing facilities to protect wildlife in the region. The 43 square kilometer nature reserve has been turned into a rehabilitation center for orangutans and has a center for the care of the great apes . Today around 25 orangutans live in the rearing stations, in addition to others living freely in the reserve.

The center takes special care of rescued young animals that are found as a result of forest clearing, illegal hunting or as pets. The orphaned orangutans train there to survive in the wild again and are released as early as possible. Today around 60 to 80 orangutans live freely in the reserve. The Conservation Center is a tourist attraction in Sabah.

The SORC is located in the immediate vicinity of the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center and shares infrastructural and veterinary facilities with this facility.
