Septic Mind is a funeral doom band founded in 2006 .

history

Guitarist Alexander Grigoryev founded with bassist, drummer and singer Michael Nagiev. After the first demo recordings , the duo signed a contract with Solitude Productions and made their live debut at the fifth Moscow Doom Festival in 2010 as opening act for Jack Frost , Pantheist and Esoteric .

In the same year, the official debut album, Начало (also The Beginning ), was released, which met with a benevolent response internationally. With Истинный зов (also The True Call ), the second studio album followed in 2011, the further development of which was judged to be an improvement in the sense of a stylistic emancipation from the Esoteric model. After the release, the duo disbanded in 2012, but officially returned in 2013 and soon followed up on previous releases. The album Раб (also Slave ) was released in 2014 and named again as a further development.

style

The style played by Septic Mind is attributed to Funeral Doom . Their music is described as "pretty psychedelic" across the discography. The debut is considered an adaptation of Esoteric's style . Subsequent publications are said to have an increasingly independent and experimental sound. Compared to Esoteric, however, Septic Mind was “more minimalist and hypnotic” from the start. The duo act with a variety of guitar effects, as well as with layered synthesizer tracks and guttural vocals .

“Dominant runs of a distorted woofer and minimalist drums form the stable foundation of the three overlong compositions, which together make up a playing time of over 60 minutes. Tough guitar riffs lay oppressively over this dense and heavy soundscape, which has only a small variation pattern. The catchy and monotonous rhythm passages are repeatedly interrupted by guitar tracks and synthesizers underlaid with effects. "

- Primal force for Evilized via The Beginning

A lasting change in sound is attested to the album Slave . The band increasingly distanced themselves from the nihilistic atmosphere of their predecessors and resorted more to the “use of melodic accents within the powerful rhythms”. In all of the pieces, the songwriting uses "playful leads from six-strings, sometimes with effects, which merge seamlessly with a raw riffing and create beautiful contrasts." The band also presents itself as " grooving or even moving quickly."

reception

The reception of Septic Mind's publications remained positive. All albums received wide international attention and received mostly positive reviews.

The beginning

The debut, called The Beginning in most reviews , received mostly positive reviews. The album was described as "a more than solid release" whose music was "quite an exciting funeral doom" for fans of the genre. Only in the review written for Metal.de was the album criticized as potentially boring despite its high quality. The ingredients are “not of poor quality, but when it comes to mixing and preparing”, the duo lacks practice, which means that the music does not keep the listener engaged. Instead, “sooner or later, boredom sets in.” Jon Carr thought differently for Doom- Metal.com said The Beginning was a "great release" one of the best releases of the year. Chaim Drishner also praised the album as "one of the best modern funeral doom albums" that one could get hold of.

The True Call

The second studio album, mostly reviewed as The True Call, is considered an increase in quality. Dominik Sonders called the album for Doom-Metal.com "an interesting record that clearly shows how far Doom Metal has come as a genre and what enormous variety the scene has to offer". In the review written for Metal.de it is said that the album is "a desolate wasteland, in which the inclined listener has to find their way first". In doing so, Septic Mind gets into too much "monotony of negativity." Nevertheless, The True Call is a worthwhile recommendation for fans of the genre. Most of the time, The True Call received high praise. Chaim Drishner declared it, similar to its predecessor, "one of the best genre albums of the year". Other reviewers also highlight the album as one of the best of the release year. It is sometimes touted as “a dark and heavy masterpiece” and one of the best releases on the Solitude Productions label .

Slave

Раб or slave , from 2014, was discussed again as a further development. It was “a successful affair, not least because of the experimental approach of the record, which brings a few fresh ideas with it.” Dominik Sonders called it a “highly interesting and well thought-out release”. For No Clean Singing, the album was hailed as "Ultra Cool" for its experimental and surprising style. Chaim Drishner calls it a “fascinating listening experience” that offers “new and exciting experiences for the senses”, although it works with known means throughout.
