Serbian Guard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Serbian Guard ( Serbian Српсқа гарда Srpska garda ) was a Serbian paramilitary unit that was deployed in Croatia during the Croatian War and was closely associated with the Serbian Renewal Movement (SPO). About 80 percent of the relatives were also members of the SPO. This paramilitary unit was founded by SPO politician Vuk Drašković and his wife Danica Drašković together with Đorđe Božović "Giška" and Branislav Matić "Beli".

The training center was located near Bor in eastern Serbia . The paramilitary unit took part in the attacks against Croatian areas near the town of Gospić . Parts of the units also fought in the Bosnian War . Đorđe Božović was the first commander of the unit and fell in a battle near Gospić. According to some statements, Božović was killed by friendly fire by troops of the Republic of Serbian Krajina . The leader and financier Branislav Matić was shot dead in Belgrade in August 1991 .

The Serbian general Nebojša Pavković pointed out the role of Drašković in the establishment of the Serbian Guard.
