The Sergius-Choir Weingarten was a male choir in Weingarten ( Ravensburg district , Baden-Württemberg ), which has dedicated itself to the music of the Eastern Church .

history

In 1976 Father Lukas Weichenrieder , later Abbot Lukas, came to the Benedictine monastery in Weingarten . In fulfillment of the papal commission from 1924 to the Benedictines to take care of the Eastern Churches , he had familiarized himself with the Eastern Church liturgy during his student years at the Pontifical Collegium Russicum in Rome.

To organize the services, a small group of singers came together to form a choir, which in 1979 was named "Sergius Choir" after the Russian monk father Sergius von Radonez . Heribert Tilmann became the conductor.

The choir cultivated relationships and a mutual exchange of singers with other Eastern church choirs, e.g. B. the Romanos Choir in Switzerland, the Prokopius Choir in Konstanz, the Wagenhausen Probsteisängern and the Chrysostomus Choir Vorarlberg.

Act

The main task of the choir was to organize catholic services celebrated in the ritual of the Eastern Churches . The choir played a key role in this rite, as instrumental church music is not common, but music is used as a “means of transporting the word to the soul”.

Most of the works of the Russian tradition were sung in German and Church Slavonic, whereby the traditional form of monastic Russian chant was primarily cultivated, but works by contemporary composers were also used.

The main sources for the chants used were the large “Choir Book for the Orthodox Church Service” in German, published by the VOM ( Association for Eastern Church Music ) in Basel and the “Sbornik”, an extensive collection of handwritten notes with Church Slavonic texts by Father Ludwig Pichler in the Collegium Russicum in decades of work and published as a photo print.

Since the beginning of 2007 the choir has been led by Alfred Löscher. In August 2009 the choir was renamed “Sergius-Chor Weingarten e. V. ”converted into a registered association. He described himself as free and independent.

In the summer of 2019, the members decided to dissolve the association and the choir.

The choir had expanded its area of responsibility by not only designing around 8 liturgies per year as before, but also wanted to make the beauty of Eastern Church music accessible to wider circles through other design forms. Liturgies were co-designed by the Sergius Choir in southern Germany, Austria, Switzerland and northern Italy and the concerts also took the choir to Regensburg together with the Munich Symphony Orchestra.
