The Seroe Colorado Lighthouse is a beacon on the island of Aruba .
history
The Seroe Colorado beacon on a hill at Baby Beach was put into operation in a wooden tower in 1881. At the time it was lit with oil lamps and looked after by a beacon keeper. The range was around 9 nautical miles and marked the shallows on the southern tip of Aruba.
In 1924 the wooden structure was replaced by an 11 meter high brick tower and the beacon was provided with a Fresnel lens for horizontal bundling. This enabled the beacon to reach a range of around 18 nautical miles and could even be seen from the Paraguaná peninsula (Venezuela). In 1937 electrical energy replaced oil lamps. During the Second World War, the lighthouse was removed to protect the Aruba refinery against German submarine attacks.
Today there is only a simple small beacon on a steel girder structure. It was built after the Second World War .
