Serpil Kemalbay Pekgözegü (* in Ardahan , Turkey ) is a Turkish politician and from May 20, 2017 to February 2018 she was co-chair of the left-wing Halkların Demokratik Partisi , which also advocates minority rights for Kurds .

Youth and education

Serpil Kemalbay was born in Ardahan, where she also graduated from school. During this time she was politically active. In 1978 she and her family moved to Istanbul . There she attended the Technical University of Istanbul to complete her degree in chemical engineering . She then lived in the UK for a number of years before returning to Turkey in the early 1990s.

Political career

Kemalbay was involved in left and socialist circles and worked for trade unions. In this context, she was committed to workers' rights, for example in the textile industry in Thrace and Istanbul. After joining the HDP, she was a candidate for the 1st constituency of Istanbul in the Turkish parliamentary election in June 2015 , but was not elected. She then became a member of the board of the HDP with the task of maintaining relationships with workers and unions.

In February 2017, the previous co-chairman of the HDP, Figen Yüksekdağ , was withdrawn from the Grand National Assembly and party membership was legally revoked by the courts. On May 6, 2017, the Central Executive Committee of the HDP decided to nominate Kemalba for the office of co-chair. At the 3rd Extraordinary Party Congress of the HDP, Serpil Kemalbay was unanimously appointed co-chair. On February 11, 2018, she handed over her position to Pervin Buldan .

Prosecution

She was arrested on February 13, 2018 for expressing opposition to Operation Olive Branch . She was conditionally released on February 20, 2018.
