The Serra da Bocaina National Park is part of the mountain range of the same name that connects São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro . Bocaina, which means "way up" in Tupi-Guarani , extends from sea level to the high mountains, where the highest point is reached with the Pico do Tira Chapéu (2200 m).

While dense Atlantic rainforest with trees up to 40 m high exist in the lower part of the nature park , the flora in the higher areas of the Bocaina National Park is increasingly loosened up. Adjacent to a mixed forest with numerous araucarias , the so-called Campos de Altitude (Montanes grassland) are located above 2000 m.

The highest mountain peak in the national park is the Tira-Chapéu (2200 m). The flora of this area is very diverse. In addition to the araucarias and pine forests in the highlands, there are many orchids and bromeliads in the tropical rainforest below 1600 m . Among the protected animals of the park are howler monkeys, tapirs , otters, capivara, many species of snakes and various protected bird species ( Macuco , Inhambus).

In 2019 the park, along with the old town of Paraty and other parks in the region as Paraty and Ilha Grande - Culture and Biodiversity , was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO .
