Serra de na Burguesa (now also known as Na Burguesa ) is a mountain range on the Balearic island of Mallorca . The mountain range, which is defined with sharp outlines and whose foothills run to the coast, is located in the southernmost part of the Serra de Tramuntana between Son Vida ( Palma ) and Son Falconer ( Calvià ). The average height is around 400 msnm . The highest peaks are the Coll dels Pastors with 443 m, the Puig Gros de Bendinat with 486 m and the Puig den Bou with 503 m.

history

The mountain range is characterized by extensive pine forests and the typical Mediterranean scrub formation of the garrigue . There is also a natural terrace on this mountain range, the Mirador de n'Alzamora , which played an important role in the deeds of King James I of Aragon . It is a protected area from which there is a view over the coast of Calvià, the mountains in the north and the plain and the port of Palma in the east. All over the valley there were once scattered Arab farmhouses, from which massive houses and agricultural goods later developed.

These mountains gained historical importance in 1229, when James I landed on Mallorca and his troops recaptured Palma from the Moors over this mountain range. The mountain range was then called Serra de Porto Pi .

In the 17th century, by order of the Marquis de la Romana (Pedro Caro i Sureda (1761–1811) from Palma), the Castell de Bendinat was built at this point . The name of the Serra de Porto Pi mountains was also changed to Serra de na Burguesa in honor of Francesc de Burgues . whose family ran an agricultural property at the foot of the mountain range in what is now the municipality of Calvia.

tourism

The plateau is now a well-frequented excursion area, both by hikers and hunters from the nearby capital, Palma. There is an access via the suburb of Palma. From Gènova , a narrow serpentine road leads directly to the Coll de Sa Creu . A small number of parking spaces are available at the panoramic restaurant of the same name (Na Burgesa). This starting point for hikes can be recognized far beyond the plain of Palma through a metal sculpture that was erected on a tower at the Coll de Sa Creu and adjoins a small chapel.
