Serrasalmus geryi is a species of saw tetra from tropical South America . It is called Geryi Piranha or Violet Line Piranha in English.

distribution

The species occurs in the lower reaches of the Brazilian Rio Araguaia and Rio Tocantins , both tributaries of the Amazon .

description

S. geryi becomes about 20 to 25 centimeters long. Other sources result in only up to 18 centimeters. The fish are silvery colored, have a dark red or black stripe on the side line from the nose to the caudal fin. There are numerous black dots on the side. The body is laterally compressed and has a rhomboid shape. In its habitus it resembles the species S. altuvei , S. hastatus , S. compressus and S. altispinis . S. geryi often has a shoulder spot and orange or red eyes.

Way of life

Little is known about the way of life of S. geryi . It feeds on the fins and scales of other fish species. Aquarium keepers report the great intraspecific aggressiveness of this species. The fish are adapted to the special living conditions of the Araguaia and Tocatins rivers. Their life cycle is determined by the high water period (December to May) and the low water period (August to October). Both rivers are heavily clouded due to their sediment load and do not form flood forests in the upper and middle reaches. Organic substances mainly collect in the oxbow lakes and tributaries. The spawning zones of S. geryi are also located here . S. geryi stays mainly in deep water and visits the bank regions to spawn.
