Serrasalmus manueli , in Venezuela Caribito Parguasero , engl. Manuel's Piranha or Green Tiger Piranha , is a species of saw tetra from tropical South America .

description

Serrasalmus manueli is a large species of saw tetra. It reaches a standard length of 36 cm, specimens from the lower Amazon should reach up to 60 cm. The color is silver with a bluish-green tinge. The operculum , throat and pectoral fin (pectorals) are colored orange-red. The sides of the body show numerous short, narrow, elongated spots, the caudal fin a black band towards the body. There is a noticeable stain on the shoulder. Young animals are longer and less massive, their head and eyes are relatively large.

The triangular, sharp teeth, micro-sawn at the cutting edges with a wavelength of about 10-15 µm, are arranged in such a way that the tips lie on top of each other when the mouth is closed and puncture the prey first. As it is closed further, the tissue is severed like a guillotine .

distribution

S. manueli lives in the catchment areas of the Amazon and Orinoco in Brazil and Venezuela . Type locality is the Río Paraguaza , Middle Orinoco.

Way of life

S. manueli prefers clear and black water rivers and avoids white water rivers . Like many other piranha species, they only occur in unpolluted waters and are extremely sensitive to water pollution. They can therefore serve as an indicator of water quality. S. manueli eat fruits and seeds as well as fins and pieces of meat that they bite out of prey fish.

Systematics

Studies published in 2007 regard the genus Serrasalmus as monophyletic with three main clades . According to this, Serrasalmus manueli belongs to clade B 1.
