Serv-U is an FTP - server for the operating system Windows and Linux . Serv-U was developed by Rob Beckers in 1995 and translated and published in German-speaking countries by kapper.net . In 2006, the development was taken over by Mark Peterson, a long-time friend of Rob Beckers, and is now not only distributed worldwide by RhinoSoft.com, but also further developed.

Serv-U was created in 1995 as probably the first FTP server for Windows. In the course of its development, a small program initially developed for 16-bit Windows for the simple transfer of files via FTP became an extensive FTP server and Internet file server with security functions, a possible user administration in a database via ODBC. The latest version promises integration in Windows Active Directory environments. Since version 3, Serv-U has been divided into a system service and an administration console, since version 4 Serv-U has allowed the transmission path to be secured via SSL, and since that time (1999) the partnership with the manufacturer of the FTP client FTP Voyager has offered the possibility integrated data transfer solutions are easy to implement. In 2006, RhinoSoft.com took over development and completely rewrote the program in C ++. The aim was and is to prevent security problems caused by, for example, overflowing buffers or the like when the program is being developed.

Since 2008 (version 7.0) the server has been equipped with a web interface, FTP access, SSH option and a Java GUI FTP client. This means that the administrator of the system often saves the installation of special FTP client software for his users and customers - they can now easily do their file transfers via the web browser. The server has been available and executable as 64-bit software since 2010 (version 10.0), and IPv6 has also been supported as the Internet protocol since version 10 . Serv-U has also been available as a native Linux application since 2011 (version 11.0).

This product is sometimes detected as a computer virus by antivirus software . This is particularly due to the use of older versions in so-called rootkits , which use the FTP server as a backdoor to transfer files to a compromised system.
