The Servizio di Sicurezza (SdS) (German: Security Service ) was a civilian Italian intelligence service . He was under the Ministry of the Interior in Rome .

history

In the early 1970s created almost all Western European countries special departments for education and combating of terrorism . Italy suffered from the attacks of the Red Brigades during these years . In addition, the strength of the Italian Communist Party caused unrest among the parties in power at the time . In 1974, after a terrorist attack on Rome's Fiumicino airport , the Italian interior minister ordered the establishment of the Ispettorato Generale per l'Azione contro il Terrorismo - IGAT . This counter-terrorism inspectorate was incorporated into the new Servizio di Sicurezza in 1975 , an administratively independent authority within the portfolio of the Ministry of the Interior. In addition to intelligence agencies, the Sds also had police officers and a small special unit , the Nucleo Anticommando . This special unit operated with some success against extremist organizations such as the Nuclei Armati Proletari and the neo-fascist Ordine Nuovo . In addition to the Sds, which specializes in terrorism, there was also the general constitutional protection service, Servizio Informazioni Generali e Sicurezza Interna (Sigsi).

Italy introduced the separation of police and intelligence services through the major intelligence reform in 1978 . The Sds was essentially integrated into the new state police force , which was now called UCIGOS (today Direzione Centrale della Polizia di Prevenzione ). The peripheral departments are known as DIGOS ( Divisione Investigazioni Generali ed Operazioni Speciali ). The Nucleo Operativo Centrale di Sicurezza emerged from the special unit of the Sds .
