Hello grandpa, I said quietly , first published in 1977, is the first children's book by Benjamin Blümchen and Bibi Blocksberg inventor Elfie Donnelly . It has been awarded major prizes.

The story is about a little boy, Michael Nidetzky, and his grandfather's death from cancer. The dying grandpa breaks the prevailing taboos about cancer and death and enables his grandson to say goodbye in which mourning is not the focus.

Awards

Hello Grandpa, I said quietly , I received the German Youth Book Prize and the Hans-im-Glück Prize in 1978 . It also appeared on the selection list for the Silver Feather . For the screenplay for the eponymous television game Donnelly was awarded the 1979 Adolf Grimme Award with Silver (together with Hans Henning Borgelt ) and the Audience Award at the Marler Group excellent.

Others

The book was also made into a radio play by the author and realized in 1979 with Manfred Steffen in the role of grandfather. The book has had over a dozen editions to date and is often used as school reading.
