Session Records was an American record label that was founded in 1943 and existed until 1946.
The small record label Session Records grew out of the Session Record Shop record business , which WP "Phil" Featheringill and his wife Evie ran at 125 North Wells Street in Chicago . As a specialty, the store sold original and re-releases of hot jazz recordings. Record store and label were founded on November 20, 1943. The label of the same name was operated by Featheringill and his business partner David W. Bell. Although the session label advertised the publication of "original recordings", initially only re-releases by Chicago artists from the first half of the 1920s, which was also due to the current recording ban of the 40s. Session specialized in reissues of rare recordings from Chicago's Autograph and Rialto labels, including important early jazz recordings by King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton, as well as recordings released by Gennett Records such as Bix Beiderbecke and the Stomp Six with Muggsy Spanier .
Featheringill began recording new material for his label as early as autumn 1943; the first recordings for Session were made at a house party with ragtime pianist Alonzo Yancey ; another 30 pages in December with his brother Jimmy Yancey and with the blues singer Cripple Clarence Lofton . The next recording sessions took place from February 1944, when traditional-style jazz formations were brought into the studio, such as Richard M. Jones 'Jazzmen, Punch Miller and His Southside Stompers , Art Hodes ' Trio and a swing-oriented combo from Trummy Young , Ben Webster , Pete Brown , John Levy and Jimmy Jones . These recordings dragged on until September 1944. In 1946 Phil Featheringill moved to California and also relocated his label there to continue as a mail order business; However, no further recordings were made. The Featheringill label closed in the fall of 1947.
