Seurbi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Seurbi were a tribe in Iberia who are counted among the Gallaeker (Callaici) tribes . According to Pliny, they settled at the mouth of the Miño, mainly in the Portuguese districts of Viana do Castelo and Braga .

Also according to Pliny, their neighbors are the Leuni tribe and the rural town of Asturica Augusta , which belonged to the Bracari . They are also added to the tribal association of the Lusitanians (Lusitani). The culture is Celtic influenced, but not Celtic in origin. The Seurbi immigrated more likely from the north than from the south in the late Hallstatt period or the La Tène period , but no later than the end of the Second Punic War .

Some researchers saw or see the Seurbi of Pliny (24-79 AD) in the Seurri (Σεουροι) in the geography of Ptolemy (~ 100-175 AD), in which the Seurbi no longer, at least below appear by this name. Accordingly, the cities of Talamina and Aqua Quintinae are also assigned to the Seurbi .
