Characters

Characters in the manga and the OVA

Shinobu Handa ( 藩 田 思 信 , Handa Shinobu )
Shinobu Handa is one of the two protagonists. She is good with money and is popular with the rest of the girls in the girls' high school. Handa is of middle-class origin and loves women of all ages. Even though she is often late for class, falls asleep in class and generally displays delinquent behavior, she is very smart and a member of the school's poetry club. She is involved in a harem with most of the girls in her student dormitory, and she has the strongest feelings for Momoko Saitō.
Momoko Naitō ( 内藤 桃子 , Naitō Momoko )
Momoko is the second protagonist. She is on the school's disciplinary committee and takes her duties very seriously, which often causes her to conflict with Shinobu. She has a passion for food, even if you can't tell by looking at it, is irritable and has a low tolerance threshold for the antics of other people, although a mischievous side is hinted at with her. Nevertheless, she is friendly and open to her classmates, which is why she is also very popular with the other girls. Naitō always wears a strong smelling perfume that reveals the smell immediately before explaining it to her counterpart. Momoko and Shinobu met in a park in their early childhood. Shinobu gave her a cookie and Momoko kissed her. This encounter made Shinobu fall in love with Momoko; Momoko, on the other hand, cannot remember. In high school, Momoko has a hard time making friends with Shinobu due to a series of confusing incidents, but after several incidents she manages to reciprocate Shinobu's feelings, realizing that Shinobu is really kind and that her love is genuine.
Kirin Suwabe ( 諏 訪 部 麒麟 , Suwabe Kirin )
Kirin is Shinobu's best friend and a scholarship-sponsored orphan who lives in a special dormitory and accompanies Shinobu permanently. She imagines she is Shinobu's servant, which in her opinion gives her a certain sense of self-worth. Kirin is in love with her best friend, despite her feelings for Momoko, and is willing to share her with other girls so that she can be by her side for as long as possible. She later begins a love affair with Matsuri, a younger classmate who has strong feelings for Kirin.
Matsuri Yoshioka
Matsuri is a student at another school and in love with Kirin. In the manga and the OVA, they both have sexual intercourse and later they both become a couple.
Kyōko Hayato ( 隼 砥 教 子 , Hayato Kyōko )
Kyōko is a teacher at the girls' school that Momoko and Shinobu attend. She is tall, beautiful and despite her 27 years has a childish character, which makes her popular with her students. After school, she often hangs out with Momoko and allows her to stay close. Because of her expensive tastes, she has had a tough time financially, but is always happy. After seducing Momoko in the manga, it is revealed that she has a serious illness that forces Hayato to quit her job to recover, which leads to the end of her relationship with Momoko. In the bonus chapter of the manga, you learn that she flew to Amsterdam to visit a friend in the hospital. She sends Momoko a detailed letter of her trip. It is unknown what illness she has, but in the manga she explains that she needs a transplant.
Sayuri Ōkami ( 大 神 小百合 , Ōkami Sayuri )
Sayuri is a third year student at the girls' school and tries to win Shinobu for herself. She is popular with her classmates and is respected by her teachers and younger students for her exemplary behavior. Nevertheless, it also shows a schematically calculating behavior. She tries to seduce Shinobu in an empty room, but is rejected by her because she does not want to hurt the feelings of others. Her real goal is for Momoko to lose her temper, expelled from school and thus separated from Shinobu. Her plan works - she is attacked by Momoko with a fire extinguisher - but the matter is cleared up and Momoko is allowed to stay at school. Nevertheless, Momoko decides to change schools. Although their plan works, Shinobu and Momoko are revealed to be dating four months after the plot.
Maya Enjōji ( 燕 条 寺 真 弥 , Enjōji Maya )
Maya is a student drawn to Shinobu's charm. She is pretty and clever, but also docile and weak-willed, so that she does everything that others tell her. After Maya finds Shinobu sleeping while doing housework, she kisses her without knowing that Shinobu will wake up shortly afterwards. She is later confronted by Shinobu about the kiss and Maya begins to apologize for it and promises to do everything possible to redeem her act. Shinobu brings Maya into an empty room and seduces her. After a long period of encouragement from Kirin, Maya also becomes Shinobu's servant. Maya is the only student on the show who spends her days at the girls' school by Shinobu's side. She later enters into a love triangle with Shinobu and Momoko. Shinobu manages to break through Maya's shell, with which she also gains self-confidence, whereby in the process she also discovers a perverse side of herself.
Chizuru Komai ( 狛 井 千 鶴 , Komai Chizuru )
Chizuru is a student from Momoko's class. She is a brave and narrow-minded girl who has trouble expressing herself. She has difficulty compromising with other students and is very purposeful, which makes it difficult to relate to her. She is in love with her older sister Shigure and desperately tries to show her this openly. Chizuru seeks advice from Momoko and manages to win her sister's affection, which Momoko shocks after becoming acquainted, as she stood by her side in order to win the unnatural love . Chizuru is a member of the Drama Club.
Shigure Komai ( 狛 井 時 雨 , Komai Shigure )
One of the older students at the girls' school. She is beautiful, intelligent, serene and has things under control which would make her a suitable class representative. Still, she decided to go straight home after school. She is unrequitedly in love with her little sister, but is very sensitive and tries to suppress her feelings. After talking to Shinobu, she realizes that her feelings are too strong to ignore.

Classification into genre and analysis

Within the Yuri genre, Shōjo Sect is an unusual series, as it is one of the few works that is explicitly erotic and pornographic, while otherwise romantic, but not sexually connoted, narratives of intimate, but "innocent" and platonic relationships between women and girls are common are. In a non-representative survey of the genre's readership, Shōjo Sect was named the fifth most popular work. The mentions were made particularly by heterosexual male (15%) and non-heterosexual female (9%) respondents. It is therefore probably by far the most popular erotic / pornographic series that is assigned to the genre. Because of this special and yet very popular position in the genre, the manga by study author Verena Maser is also counted among the most important Yuri series. In the phase of consolidation of the genre from 2003 onwards, the series contributed to expanding the readership into the field of erotic and pornographic literature.

Contrary to the usual expectations of pornography, Shōjo Sect is initially a love story. Sexual characteristics such as breasts are not shown exaggerated, but the drawings are aimed at the representation of beauty. As the editor remarked in an interview, this sets the work apart from the other series in the magazine. Comic MegaStore is aimed at adult men and mostly contains pornographic stories about sex between men and women. The editor also attributes the distinct otherness of Shōjo Sect to be the reason for the series' particular success. Although not published in a typical magazine, Shōjo Sect was very soon received by Yuri fans and attributed to the genre in magazines, fan publications and reviews. This may be due to the open advertising with the lesbian couple for the paperback edition. In the course of this issue, unlike in the magazine, the series was also able to reach a larger female audience. The genre leader Yuri sakuhin fairu praised the manga as revolutionary and innovative in the emphasis on sex between the two girls, depicted in elegant, careful lines.
