Shackleton is an impact crater on the front of the moon in close proximity to the south pole of the moon. Because of its special location, some peaks on the crater rim are exposed to permanent solar radiation, while the interior is permanently in shadow. Therefore, the crater was discussed as one of the possible locations for the establishment of a lunar colony , since solar panels erected on the peaks would allow a constant power supply. It is also assumed that volatile substances such as water ice may have accumulated in the cold trap inside the crater.
The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1994 after the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton .
