Shadow Man: 2econd Coming is an action adventure game released by Acclaim Entertainment in 2001 and the official sequel to Shadow Man . It is the implementation of the Shadowman comic series by Valiant Comics and was released exclusively for the PlayStation 2 on March 1, 2002.

action

It begins with the story of the ghost hunter Thomas Deacon, who has to protect the book of shadows from dark demons. Mike LeRoi, the Shadow Man, is now commissioned by Nettie to penetrate into the realm of the dead and put an end to the hustle and bustle. After the fight with Legion, Shadow Man has to find Luke's Teddy in order to return to the "realm of the living". After he holds it in his hands again, he sets out as Mike to the "Wild at Heart", where gangsters are lurking on him and want to kill him. He defeats all opponents and then makes his way to church, where Nettie is waiting for him to tell him that Jaunty is in trouble and Mike has to find him. Now he sets out to free his old friend Jaunty from his predicament.

Gameplay

The basic gameplay of Shadow Man: 2econd Coming is generally based on its predecessor. However, the level of difficulty has been reduced and the level design has been simplified or made more linear and clearer, so that even beginners can benefit from the title. Furthermore, more weapons have been integrated into the game and Shadow Man can still use two weapons at the same time, but this can lead to more cumbersome operation and more confusing weapon switching. In addition to exploring the game world, puzzles and skill exercises were integrated as in the first game. Another new feature is that protagonist Mike LeRoi can now find a pocket watch during the course of the plot with which he can influence the day / night cycle. During the day he can move around in his normal form as a person and at night he becomes a Shadow Man with special abilities such as infinite diving without drowning and immortality.

development

In Germany, Shadow Man: 2econd Coming was released in two versions. The German version was available in a shortened USK -16 version, while the unabridged USK-18 version was available without German voice output. As with its predecessor, the blood display has been changed, with Acclaim changing the color from red to green in order to avoid indexing .

reception

On average, Shadow Man: 2econd Coming received mixed reviews ( Metacritic : 68%).

ShadowMan 2econd Coming offers a lot of gaming for the money, good graphics with outstanding lighting effects and a gloomy atmosphere that is second to none. Only: all of this is revealed much too late. […] Since ShadowMan 2 offers a lot of light as well as a lot of shadow, only real fans of the first part will be able to gather behind Mike LeRoi and his alter ego. With a little more fine-tuning, however, a lot more would have been possible and Raziel would have wavered a lot more. "

Publisher Acclaim created controversy with its announcement that it would pay families of the recently deceased to put up an advertising banner on their tombstones. Acclaim described the offer as particularly interesting, especially for “poorer families”, which was perceived as tasteless.
