Shakespeare Research Centers
Shakespeare Research Centers are scientific institutions, mostly at libraries, that study the work of William Shakespeare . In almost all cases they were created around a collection of early prints.
Research facilities in the UK
There are four major Shakespeare research institutions in the UK . The Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford houses early editions of Shakespeare's poems and two copies of the First Folio. The Bodleian Library has made its holdings available on the Internet and launched an international initiative to publish quartos. The British Library in London owns the library of David Garrick (37 quartos), that of King George III. (23 quartos) and the Shakespeare Collection by James Orchard Halliwell-Phillipps . There are three major facilities in the United States . The Huntington Library in San Marino, California has an extensive collection of Shakespeare prints. These include four copies of the First Folio, ten of the Second Folio (including the so-called Perkins Folio ), seven of the Third Folio and eight of the Fourth Folio. The collection also includes Shakespeare portraits. The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC holds the world's largest collection of printed Shakespeare's works. This includes a total of 82 copies of the First Folio and 205 Quartos. The The Horace Howard Furness Memorial Library. at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia owns numerous first prints and documents on theatrical history.
Research institutions in the Federal Republic of Germany
The library of the German Shakespeare Society is kept in the Duchess Anna Amalia Library in Weimar . The Shakespeare Library at the University of Munich , founded by Wolfgang Clemen in 1964, houses literature on English drama before 1642, and the archive on the stage history of Shakespeare productions in Germany since 1960.
