The Shala ( Amharic ሻላ ሐይቅ , also called Shalla ) is a lake in Ethiopia . It is located approx. 200 km south of Addis Ababa , in the Abijatta Shalla National Park , as is Lake Abijatta , only three kilometers north of it , and fills a 240,000 year old volcanic caldera .
According to the satellite image, the lake is 26.5 km long and up to 16.2 km wide. It has an area of 329 km² and is a maximum of 266 meters deep. The average depth is 87 meters. This results in a volume of 36.7 km³. The lake is at an altitude of 1558 m .
The lake is known for its sulfur springs in the bottom . Pink pelicans inhabit the islands of the lake, one of which under the name Pelican Island is known.
