The Shanxi Museum ( Chinese  山西 博物院 , Pinyin Shānxī Bówùyuàn ) is the largest museum and cultural building in Shanxi Province . With its nationwide leading infrastructure, one of the most important collections of Chinese prehistory is housed and preserved. Since March 2008, entry is free with valid ID.

Career

On October 9, 1919, the Shanxi Education Library and Museum ( Chinese  山西 教育 图书 博物馆 , Pinyin Shānxī Jiàoyù Túshū Bówùguăn ) opened and was one of the earliest museums in China. In 1925 the complex was redesigned as a public library and in 1933 it continued to be used as a provincial educational institution. The former museum is categorized as a subdivision and is now conducting a number of archaeological activities with the collaboration of Freer Galerie . Shortly after the extensive Japanese invasion , the institution and the collections are badly destroyed and some of them are drawn to Japan.

In September 1953 the remaining museum and the Kulturerber-Halle Taiyuan are agreed and called again as the Provincial Museum Shanxi ( Chinese  山西省 博物馆 , Pinyin Shānxīshĕng Bówùguăn ). After the completion of the new building it was renamed to its current name.

Collection and exhibition

The museum houses around 400,000 cultural objects, a good 160,000 modern and 110,000 old books. The permanent exhibition is divided into 2 large areas. One is cultural history and the other is art history. The highlights include the richly decorated bronze vessels of the northern states belonging to the Shang dynasty, alliance inscriptions from Houma , numerous coins from the state of Jin, stone sculptors from Nannieshui, cult images from Baoning Temple.
