Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson
Sharlene Linette Cartwright-Robinson (* 1971 in the Bahamas ) is a politician of the People's Democratic Movement (PDM) of the Turks and Caicos Islands , who has been Prime Minister of the Turks and Caicos Islands since 2016 .
Life
Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson was born in the Bahamas to migrant workers from the Turks and Caicos Islands and moved to the Turks and Caicos Islands with her parents in 1977 at the age of six. There she attended Pierson High School , from which today's Marjorie Basden High School emerged . After school with honors and the award of the Governor's Cup was completed in 1988, she began studying later law at the University of the West Indies (UWI), where they the Cave Hill Campus and the Norman Manley - Law School visited. After graduating, she worked as a lawyer and was later appointed a member of the Legislative Council , where she chaired various committees.
In 2003, Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson applied for the People's Democratic Movement (PDM) for a seat in Parliament (House of Assembly) , but suffered a defeat. She is also involved with the Baptists and has been the Youth Director of the Baptist Union of the Islands since 2006. After the self-government of the British overseas territory in the Caribbean was lifted on August 14, 2009, she became a member of the Consultative Forum . She was relieved of this position in May 2012 after the then Governor Ric Todd declared that persons who intended to run for the elections scheduled for November 2012 could not be members of the Interim Advisory Council or the Consultative Forum. In July 2012, she became the first woman to become deputy chairwoman of the People's Democratic Movement and thus deputy to PDM leader Oswald Skippings . In the November 2012 elections, she ran as one of eleven candidates for the five-seat constituency All Island District and was elected a member of the House of Assembly for the first time. At the same time, she replaced Skippings as party leader and as such was also the first woman to be the opposition leader in parliament, in which the PDM had seven of the 15 seats. In 2012 she also became president of the youth department of the Caribbean Baptist Fellowship ( CBF ) and as such is by virtue of office also a member of the executive board of the CBF and vice-president of the youth committee of the Baptist World Alliance . In addition, she is involved as a member of the Kiwanis - service club .
In the elections on December 15, 2016, the PDM won ten of the 15 seats in the House of Assembly with 47.3 of the votes, whereupon Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson succeeded Rufus Ewing of the Progressive National Party (PNP) on December 19, 2016 first woman to be sworn in as Prime Minister of the Turks and Caicos Islands . The previously ruling PNP received only five seats with 35.4 percent of the vote. In her cabinet she also took over the office of finance minister, while Vaden D. Williams was interior minister. In 2017, she also served as the chair of the OCTA (Overseas Countries and Territories Association) founded on November 17, 2000 .
Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson is married to Lorne Robinson and has two children.
