Rufus Ewing

Rufus Washington Ewing (* 1968 in Blue Hills, Providenciales ) is a politician of the Progressive National Party (PNP) of the Turks and Caicos Islands , who was Prime Minister of the Turks and Caicos Islands between 2012 and 2016 .

Life

Ewing was the son of the politician Hilly Ewing, who was temporarily deputy chief minister of the Turks and Caicos Islands, and his wife Jane Ewing. He first began studying medicine at the University of the West Indies (UWI), from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). A post-graduate studies , he finished medicine with a doctor of medicine (Doctor of Medicine in General Surgery) and also completed studies abroad to the Bahamas , USA and Canada . He then worked as a doctor in the UK and Jamaica and became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCSEd).

Upon his return to the Turks and Caicos Islands, Ewing became involved in public health development and eventually became deputy chief medical officer and director of health at the Ministry of Health. After earning a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University (JHU), he continued his involvement in public health and played an influential role in developing the National Healthcare Renewal Project) . He has also served as director of the Caribbean Health Research Council and president of the Civil Service Association.

As such, Ewing became leader of the Progressive National Party (PNP) in 2012 and won the November 9, 2012 election, in which the PNP won eight of the 15 seats in Parliament (House of Assembly) . Four days later, on November 13, 2012, he was sworn in as the third prime minister and took over the office of tourism minister in his cabinet. In the cabinet, which was sworn in on November 14, 2012, Washington Misick took over the post of finance minister and Porsha Stubbs-Smith took over the post of home secretary. In the 2016 elections, however, the PNP suffered a defeat against the People's Democratic Movement (PDM), which won ten of the 15 seats and was able to appoint Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson as a new prime minister.

Ewing is married to Dawn A. Perry.
