In 1936, the place received the status of a village (selo) and was renamed Kikwidse , after the revolutionary and division commander of the Red Army Vasily Kikwidse (1895-1919), who was located 25 km to the northwest during the Russian Civil War , until today also after him named hamlet was killed. The Rajon was renamed accordingly. On February 25, 1960 the village of Kikwidse was merged with some nearby settlements and received urban-type settlement status . Since December 11, 1997 the place is again Staniza under the original name; however, the name of the Rajon was retained.
