Wassili ("Wasso") Issidorowitsch Kikwidse ( Russian Василий Исидорович Киквидзе , Georgian ვასილ კიკვიძე Vasil Kikwidse ; * February 28th July / March 12th  1895 greg. In Kutaisi ; † January 11th 1919 near the Subrikvidse court , Novonikolajewski Rajon, Volgograd Oblast ) was a Russian-Georgian revolutionary and participant in the Russian Civil War .

Life

Kikwidse came from the family of a minor official. He volunteered in World War I and served in the cavalry . Kikwidse was a left-wing socialist and was arrested several times for his revolutionary activities in the army.

After the February Revolution of 1917 he was elected Chairman of the Soldiers' Committee of the 6th Caucasian Division and, after the October Revolution, Second Chairman of the Military Revolutionary Committee of the Southwest Front. From December 1917 to May 1918, Kikwidse commanded the Red Guards division in Rovno , which fought against the counter-revolutionary troops of the Central Rada in the area around Rovno and Dubno , and later also against the German occupation forces in Ukraine. In May 1918 Kikwidse formed a division in Tambov , from which the 16th Rifle Division later emerged, and became its commander. His division was involved in the capture of Zhitomir and in actions against the Don Cossacks .

From June 1918 to January 1919 he took part in the fighting against the troops of General PN Krasnov . He died in battle.

Kikiwidse is buried in the Vagankovo Cemetery in Moscow.

Honors

The rifle division he commanded received his name, as did his place of death and the Stanitsa Preobrazhensk in Volgograd Oblast. In 1959 monuments were erected in Kutaisi and Tbilisi in honor of Kikwidses . In 1970 the Soviet Post issued a special stamp in honor of his 75th birthday . In 1980 his life was filmed under the title Шальная пуля ("The Stray Ball").
