etymology

The name Sheesh Mahal comes from Urdu and means crystal palace . The Krystallpalast is called a mirror palace or mirror hall due to the equipment of the pavilion. The equipment in the Sheesh Mahal also creates a shiny effect.

history

The foundation stone for the Lahore Fort was laid in 1566 by Akbar the Great . Akbar relied on experienced craftsmen who were also involved in the construction of Fatehpur Sikri to build it . Shahan Jahan converted the fort into a residence and added some structures. The Sheesh Mahal is located in the Shah Burj, which was built by the Mughal Mughal Jahangir . The block was used specifically for meetings. The expansion of the complex took place from 1628 to 1634. The architecture of the Sheesh Mahal is evident in the extensive marble used. The Sheesh Mahal was the favorite place of Ranjit Singh during the Sikh rule .

architecture

The Sheesh Mahal was built by Shah Jahan. The facade consists of an archway supported by pillars that lead into the garden of the Sheesh Mahal. The gussets are decorated with diamonds. The pavilion has the shape of a half octagon and has several apartments, the roofs of which are equipped with a spire. The interior of the apartment is decorated with different mosaic shapes. The roof of the main hall is two floors high. The main hall used to be decorated with fresco paintings . This decoration has been replaced by mosaics of various shapes and colors.

conservation

The further expansion of the Sheesh Mahal during the era of the British and Sikhs increased the risk of collapse. In 1904 the roof of the veranda collapsed. The Sheesh Mahal was then marked as endangered in 1927 and extensively renovated. Similar problems arose in the 1960s and repair work resolved it. The Sheesh Mahal was listed by law in 1975 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 . The roof of the Sheesh Mhal was extensively renovated in 2006.
