Sheikh Zayed Bridge

The Sheikh Zayed Bridge is one of three bridges that connect the city of Abu Dhabi to the mainland. The total length of the bridge is 842 meters. It is named after Sheikh Zayed , the first President of the United Arab Emirates . Its two four-lane carriageways are supported by S-shaped arches, which thematize the sand dunes of the desert country and were proposed by the British - Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid .

It was opened on November 25, 2010 after eight years of construction. 250,000 m 3 of concrete and 80,000 t of reinforcement material were used. The expansion properties of the structure are designed for a temperature range from 0 degrees to 60 degrees Celsius; Strong vibration dampers ensure earthquake security .

Construction costs came to around $ 270 million after many project delays and financial disputes between the government as the client and the construction companies. Originally, the bridge should have opened in 2006.

The Sheikh Zayed Bridge is to serve as relief for the two previous bridges between the mainland and Abu Dhabi, the Maqta Bridge and the Mussafah Bridge .

The bridge is illuminated in different colors. The lighting concept was developed by Rogier van der Heide and implemented by Philips .

Critics complain about the structure of the bridge, which was designed purely from a visual point of view and was not optimally designed to absorb the flow of forces.
