Bernhard Pack

Bernhard Pack (born August 8, 1964 in Elversberg ; † September 21, 1992 at Benitatxell ) was a German documentary filmmaker and cave diver. He made a significant contribution to the exploration of the submarine cave system of the Moraig in the province of Alicante and died there during a research dive.

life and work

Pack often traveled around Alicante with his parents when he was young . There he learned about the great drinking water problem the population had in the summer months. So far, drilling has not been successful in the search for drinking water. In Moraira Although the underground freshwater source of Moraig was, however, the cave system has so far been largely unexplored. So far, two cave divers had died while looking for a place to drill a hole to found a well for pumping drinking water.

Pack, who had learned to dive during his holidays in Spain, was fascinated by this problem and began exploring the cave system with great personal and material commitment in 1987. Between 1987 and 1992 he completed over 100 dives in the Moraig and documented the system over 1000 meters.

Pack financed his expeditions himself. During his expeditions he shot the documentary Moraig in 1989/90 , in which he recorded his dives. It caused a stir internationally and was broadcast on many European television channels.

Pack discovered a previously unknown type of cancer in the cave system. He died in a comparatively easy dive on the way back a few meters from the cave exit due to a lack of oxygen.

To date, the Moraig cave has not been sufficiently explored to found a well.

Honors

Pack was awarded a Spanish Science Prize for his research and tireless commitment in southern Spain. His film Moraig received ten first prizes at international festivals. Among them the 1st Prize and the Audience Prize at the International Documentary Film Festival in Barcelona.
