Sheila James Kuehl (born February 9, 1941 in Tulsa , Oklahoma ) is an American politician and actress .

Life

In her childhood, Kuehl was seen as a child star in various television roles. She played Stuart Erwin's daughter Jackie on the television show Trouble With Father . In the 1960s she portrayed Zelda Gilroy in the television show The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis . After her acting career ended, Kuehl began studying law in the 1970s . She graduated from UCLA ( BA ) and Harvard Law School ( JD .).

Kuehl became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1994 she was elected for the first time as a member of the California State Assembly , to which she was a member until 2000. Kuehl was the first openly gay MP in the Lower House of California . In 2000 she was elected to the California Senate, where she remained until 2008. Her successor in the Senate in 2008 was Fran Pavley .

Kuehl lives in Santa Monica .
