Sheldon B. Kopp

Sheldon Bernard Kopp (born March 29, 1929 in New York City , † March 29, 1999 in Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC ) was an American psychotherapist .

He lived near Silver Spring , Maryland. His life's work is characterized by his psychotherapeutic work and his activity as an author. His books aim to encourage readers to be more self-respecting.

Career

He was born in the Bronx neighborhood and graduated from Brooklyn College in 1951 . He received his master's degree in 1953 and his doctorate in 1960 from the New School for Social Research . As a clinical psychologist, he held a senior position at Trenton State Hospital. In 1961 he moved to Washington, where he practiced as chief clinical psychologist in the District of Columbia Adult Mental Health Clinic. Among other things, he conducted psychotherapeutic sessions with sex offenders in prison there. After this activity he took up an independent psychotherapeutic activity in his own practice.

Author activity

Sheldon B. Kopp wrote 17 books and numerous specialist articles. His articles have been published in the journals Psychiatric Quarterly , Psychology Today, and Psychological Perspectives . One of his best-known books is entitled “Meet Buddha on the road ...” (Original: If you meet Buddha on the road, kill him! Published in 1972). In this book he analyzes ways of people who want to find meaning and value in themselves, combining ancient wisdom such as Zen Buddhism with modern psychotherapy.

The "eschatological laundry slip"

Sheldon B. Kopp is also known for his eschatological laundry slip , an extract from the register of 927 [...] eternal truths , which was published at the end of the 1972/1976 book.
