The station was opened under the name Shepherd's Bush on June 13, 1864 by the Hammersmith & City Railway . This company initially belonged to the Great Western Railway and came into the possession of the Metropolitan Railway in 1867 (predecessor of the Metropolitan Line ). On March 31, 1914, the station was closed, moved about two hundred meters north and reopened the following day at its current location. In 1990 the Hammersmith branch of the Metropolitan Line became operationally independent under the name Hammersmith & City Line. On October 5, 2008, the station was renamed Shepherd's Bush Market to avoid confusion with the nearby Shepherd's Bush station on the Central Line . Circle Line trains have also stopped here since December 13, 2009.
