The United States Geological Survey mapped them using the United States Navy's own surveys and aerial photographs from 1956 to 1962. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1968 after Paul D. Sheppard, warehouse manager at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctic winter 1966.
