Sherif Gaber

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sherif Gaber (full name: Egyptian Arabic : Sherif Gaber Abdelazim Bakr ;شريف جابر عبد العظيم بكر, DMG Šarīf Ǧābir ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm Bakr * approx. 1993) is a political activist and blogger who was arrested on October 27, 2013 for atheism and "disregard for religion".

biography

Gaber has been making satirical videos with content critical of religion and Islam for years. With videos like “Does God exist?”, “Evolution and religion are incompatible” and “Criticizing religion is a human right”, his videos got him into legal trouble. The Egyptian law against blasphemy, Article 98 (f) of the Criminal Code, was eventually used to justify his arrest.

Arrest and trial

At 3:00 a.m. on October 27, 2013, three armored state security vehicles and one military vehicle arrived at Gaber's home. A number of State Security officers entered his home, conducted a search, and confiscated all of his property including, but not limited to, his school papers and documents, books, PC, cell phone, and money. They then threw him in the car and took him to jail.

On December 3, 2013, the court decided to release Gaber after paying LE 7,500 (2,500 for the blasphemy charge and 5,000 for "spreading immoral values and unusual thoughts that provoke and disrupt the public peace and national security of Egypt") . He was released the next day, but his case was still ongoing.

On February 16, 2015, Gaber was found guilty and sentenced to one year in prison. He was allowed to appeal for 1000 LE, but instead Gaber decided to go into hiding.

Hide and seek and arrest

Mina Ahadi called for solidarity with Sherif Gaber on July 26, 2019.

Gaber's whereabouts were unknown, but in July 2015 the Patheos blog reported that Gaber had posted pro-science and pro-human rights videos on YouTube.

On March 31, 2018, Gaber tweeted about an imminent arrest, calling for calm among his followers, claiming he will "keep making videos when I get out ... I'll write the scripts in jail."

On Saturday, May 5, 2018, Gaber was arrested and detained again. Several media outlets linked his arrest with a large number of arrests around the time of President El-Sisi's re-election in March 2018 (widely viewed as a farce as the elections were not free and fair), including another satirical video maker named Shady Abuzaid (or Shadi Abuzeid) a week after Gaber.

On October 1, 2018, Gaber tweeted saying that his passport was confiscated at an Egyptian airport and that he was banned from leaving the country. He also said that there were two "separate blasphemy charges" pending against him and that he could not provide more details. According to Gaber's tweet, the total number of crimes against him, each punishable by up to 15 years in Egyptian prison, amounted to five on October 12, 2018 "from blasphemy to offensive Islam, contempt for religion, support for homosexuality, shaking the peace in society up to religious extremism.
