The Niō gate to the temple

The Shinchōkoku-ji ( Japanese 新 長 谷 寺 ) is a temple of the Chisan branch ( 智 山 派 , Chisan-ha ) of the Shingon direction of Buddhism in the city of Seki in Gifu Prefecture .

history

In the Jōō period (1222-1224) the priest Gonin ( 護 忍 ) was ordered in a dream on Hase-dera to build a new temple here in the province of Yamato . This then became the prayer temple of Emperor Go-Horikawa . The temple was built on the principle of the seven-building system ( 七 堂 伽藍 , Shichidō-garan ), had 8 clauses for Shingon followers and 8 clauses for followers of the Tendai direction and was thus an important temple. In 1300 the temple burned down, but was rebuilt immediately afterwards in the Kamakura period with the support of the Nikaidō , who held important positions in Bakufu .
