Shirley Owens (born June 10, 1941 in Henderson , North Carolina ) is an American singer who became known as the front singer of the girl group The Shirelles .

Life

Shirley Owens was born in Henderson, North Carolina in 1941. She attended Passaic High School , where she and three of her classmates founded the Shirelles in 1957 . In the 1960s, the group had some success with Owens as the lead singer before they began a solo career in 1975 under the stage name Lady Rose . As early as 1969, the singer released two solo albums and three singles in which the Shirelles were only active as background singers, only mentioning her first name . The Shirelles existed until 1982 and then disbanded.

Also in 1975 Owens released under her married name Shirley Alston a solo album entitled With A Little Help From My Friends , which was named after the song of the same name by The Beatles . Several members of other bands played on the album, including The Flamingos , The Drifters , The Five Satins , Danny & The Juniors and Herman's Hermits .

Along with the other former members of the Shirelles , Owens was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 . She was married twice and is now called Shirley Alston Reeves .
