Shisiwa Wenefu (also: Chissioua Ouénéfou , Île Ouénéfou ) is the largest island in the Parc marin de Mohéli , south of the island of Mohéli in the island state of Comoros .

geography

Îlot de Nyumashiwa

The archipelago off the south coast of Mohéli consists of 5 large islands, which extend finger-like to the south into the sea, and numerous small rock islands and reefs. Wenefu is the largest of these islands and is centrally located in the archipelago. In the east joins the Chissioua Chandzi (Shisiwa Shandzi), which rises out of the sea only about 400 m south of the eastern tip of the island. To the west, the island of Shisiwa Kandzoni (Chissioua Kanzoni) joins about 2.5 km away . There are other rocky islands just off the coast of the island in the west ( Shisiwa Mbuzi - Chissioua Mbouzi, Rocher Noir )

The island itself is roughly in the shape of an ax with a wider part to the north and a narrow “handle” that extends south into the sea. The northern part rises to over 140  m in height, while the narrowest point in the middle is much lower and in the very south there is again an increase to over 100  m .

The name Shisiwa sha Wenefu means in Comorian (Shimwali): island of the lepers . For a long time it was a quarantine camp for lepers . The sick received their food from their families. They lived on the north coast, across from Nioumachoua . Ordinary fishermen lived on the south coast.
