Shunji Inomata (* 1918 ; † 1990 ) was a Japanese civil engineer . He was a pioneer of prestressed concrete in Japan.

Inomata graduated from Tokyo University in 1941 and then did research at the State Railway Institute. From 1948 to 1950 he carried out systematic tests on prestressed reinforced concrete beams (shrinkage and creep of the concrete, loss of tension in the steel, signs of fatigue, etc.) and designed the first prestressed concrete sleepers in Japan. From 1952 he also examined post-tensioned prestressed concrete and developed the first post-tensioned prestressed concrete girders in Japan (implemented in a new platform in Tokyo Central Station in 1953). In 1953 he studied with Yves Guyon in France for a year .

Inomata was a professor at the Aichi Institute of Technology and an expert in reinforced and prestressed concrete. He was also a consulting engineer.

He designed many prestressed concrete bridges in Japan and wrote many essays and books on reinforced and prestressed concrete.

In 1986 he received the Freyssinet Medal and in 1975 the fip medal and he was vice-president of fip, whose earthquake commission he headed from 1974 to 1982.
