The Siamese barbel ( Leptobarbus hoevenii ), engl. Sultan Fish, Hoven's Carp, Cigar Shark, River Barb, Mad Barb or Pinktail Barb, chines. 何氏 細 鬚 魮 (引進), in Thai ปลา อ้ายบ้า is a species of barbel from Southeast Asia.

description

The fish species has the following fin formula : dorsal 9-9, anal 8. Young fish still have typical black stripes. The fish has an elongated body and large scales. The Siamese barb is on average 50 centimeters long, in exceptional cases even up to a meter.

distribution and habitat

The Siamese barbel is native to Malaysia , Thailand , Indonesia , Sumatra, and Borneo . It is mostly found in streams and rivers, periodically also on flood plains.

Way of life

The Siamese barbel prefers water temperatures of 23 to 26 ° C and is omnivorous . In the flooded rainforests they eat insects , zooplankton , vegetable parenchymal tissue and, among other things, seeds of the Chaulmoogra tree ( Hydnocarpus ssp .) That have fallen into the water , which has a narcotic effect and can trigger unusual movement behavior in the Siamese barbel. For this reason it is sometimes also referred to as Mad Barb and is unpopular as an edible fish in Laos because of the toxic residues . Leptobarbus hoevenii lives mainly in groups or small schools in the mean water or near the bottom . Although some scientists did not describe this species of fish as a migratory fish, Siamese barbel has been repeatedly observed to participate in food migrations to the flooded rainforests and back. In the Mekong , Siamese barbs move upstream from January to February and downstream from June to July. During this time they are easily caught.

Systematics

The Siamese barbel forms the genus Leptobarbus with four other, smaller remaining Southeast Asian carp fish species :

  • Leptobarbus hosii (Regan, 1906)
  • Leptobarbus melanopterus Weber & de Beaufort, 1916
  • Leptobarbus melanotaenia Boulenger, 1894
  • Leptobarbus rubripinna (Fowler, 1937)

The genus Leptobarbus is assigned to the family of carp fish (Cyprinidae) and forms an independent monotypical subfamily, the Leptobarbinae.

use

The Siamese barbel is a common food fish, especially in Chinese cuisine. Incorrectly prepared dishes made from Siamese barbel meat can cause nausea. The market price of this species is relatively high in Cambodia and Vietnam . They are fattened in pond farms, and their reproduction can be induced by giving them hormones.
